LAUNCHER SYSTEM

Adrian has been the primary designer of the launcher system, and the first launcher prototype was completed in early September, 1996. Below are pictures of that first prototype.

The projectile is launched by applying electricity to a muscle wire circuit. Muscle wire is a titanium and nickel alloy which contracts when subjected to an electric charge. For our design, the muscle wire was routed around several teflon pegs and then attached to a spring pin. When current is supplied to the muscle wire (about 0.75 Amps), it contracts and pulls up the spring pin which releases the door and fires the projectile. Below are some CAD drawings and some pictures of the launcher flight model.
