Space Weather
Is there weather in space?  Absolutely.  Charged particles streaming from the sun produce everything from colorful auroras Aurorato debilitating radio blackouts on Earth, and can be seriously dangerous to astronauts and spacecraft venturing beyond Earth’s protective magnetic field.   As part of our program in Space Weather, we have mined the web to compile a compendium of exemplary classroom activities on solar system “meteorology.”  The activities are all online, sorted by grade level.

On Campus

At LASP, undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students work side by side with studentsprofessional scientists and engineers to design and conduct space science missions.

In LASP's engineering division, students participate in instrument and spacecraft development that complements their academic studies.

The Student Dust Counter, for example, recently launched on the New Horizons Mission to Pluto.

Students are also at the heart of LASP's Mission Operations Division, where a rigorous summer training program and a battery of certification examinations prepare students to plan MOCCscience observations, monitor spacecraft performance, create software tools for data analysis, and more. Students also study planetary physics, atmospheric science, space physics and solar terrestrial physics with guidance from faculty mentors. Learn more about LASP's higher education.

Many of our scientists and faculty teach a courses at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

LASP is committed to building innovative education and outreach programs that connect scientists and engineers with the public. Joining forces with sunkit demohigh quality educational and scientific partners in Colorado and across the country, we create dynamic earth and space science programs (such as the SORCE "Sun Kit" Demonstration (13.6Mb QuickTime movie)) tailored to the unique needs of students, teachers, journalists, and the public. In addition, our education and public outreach office offers special public events, laboratory tours, and professional development workshops for educators and journalists. If you have any questions about LASP, about the science done here, or how to schedule a tour, please feel free to contact us.
