Dr. Tom Woods
Ph.D. in Physics

Dr. Tom Woods has two very important responsibilities at LASP.  As LASP’s Associate Director of Technical Divisions he is guiding the lab into the future with a broader perspective to meet the lab’s long-term goals.  In addition, as a Senior Research Scientist, he is involved in numerous past, present, and future solar research missions.

Tom joined LASP in 1987 to work on the UARS SOLSTICE program under the direction of Dr. Gary Rottman. He now serves as the SORCE Principal Investigator and SORCE XPS Instrument Scientist. Tom is also the Principal Investigator of the TIMED SEE and SDO EVE satellite instrument programs at LASP. There are several future research projects where Tom is playing a key role. His studies and work are focused primarily on the solar ultraviolet irradiance and its long-term effects on the Earth's atmosphere. Tom is part of the Solar Influences Group here at LASP.

He obtained his BS in Physics in 1981 from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) and his PhD in Physics in 1985 from the Johns Hopkins University under the direction of Dr. Paul Feldman.
