This position is a member of the production team in the Engineering Division of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP).  Join a team that develops instruments for use on NASA flight programs.  This position is integral to the research program and will be an active participant in assuring that the scientific goals will be met.

Prototype Machinist works from engineering drawings with a working knowledge of GD&T standards.  Primary responsibility will be performing skilled machining tasks to fabricate small scale (fastener size 00's to 10's) complex aerospace structures, mechanisms, and opto-mechanical instrumentation for application in vacuum and space flight environments.

DUTIES:

Review machining orders for completeness, complexity, or unique problems then make suggestions relating to the machining, fabrication, or assembly to assist leads and supervisors in manufacturing process planning including produceability studies on new designs.

Maintain required machining logs, records, and reports in accordance with LASP policies; perform preventive maintenance on machining equipment; design and fabrication of basic holding fixtures; developing feed and speed information for new materials and new types of cutting tools.

Setup and operate lathes for: turning, facing, drilling, boring, and thread cutting.  In addition, must be able to setup and operate vertical milling machines for: milling, drilling, boring, and reaming parts using basic steps on rotary tables, and offset heads. 

Plan and successfully machine parts to precision (less than 0.001) tolerances then use basic inspection equipment to check parts per ANSI Y 14.5.

Maintain high standards of quality and work to improve products and processes. 

REQUIREMENTS:

Requires six years or more experience in prototype machining.  Technical or engineering degree strongly preferred.  Position requires 2 or more years experience programming MasterCam for 3D contouring on CNC milling machine and associated CNC milling machine setup and operation.  Experience with EZTrack mills and CNC lathes a plus.
