Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE072009)Posted July 21, 2009 Become a member of the Quality Assurance team in the Engineering Division of the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) in Boulder. We design and build instruments for NASA’s space-based observations of the Sun, Earth and planets. The successful candidate will participate as a member of an instrument team that will develop, fabricate and test NASA-funded space flight hardware. The QA Engineer (QAE) will be responsible for implementing the project’s quality requirements by performing a wide variety of quality assurance functions. These include (but are not limited to) inspections of: procurement documentation; incoming parts and materials; pre-cap of electronic components; assembly kits; in-process workmanship of printed circuit boards, harnesses, and other hardware; test set-up; sources and integration activities. The QA engineer will interface with assembly technicians, instrument makers, production management, controlled stores technicians and engineers to oversee issues of concern and participate in problem-solving processes. The QAE must generate quality planning and process documentation and lead training in a group setting for workmanship and institutional processes. The QAE will also be required to interface with contractors and NASA, as well as participate in and present at formal project-level reviews. Strong interpersonal skills are essential. Experience with system safety, contamination control, reliability analysis, EEE parts and materials, and ISO/AS9100 quality systems is beneficial, but not required. Some travel will be required in order to audit subcontractors, and to perform various inspections at contractor, spacecraft integration, and launch facilities. A BS degree or equivalent experience in a technical field, plus a minimum of 7 years of experience working as a quality assurance engineer in an aerospace environment is required. Current or past NASA workmanship training and certification is strongly desired. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work independently and responsibly are a must.
