Graduate Student Software Engineer Employment Opportunity at LASP
The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is a world-renowned space science research institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
LASP leads with a science driven approach, and is the only research institute in the world that has sent an instrument to every planet in the solar system, Pluto, and beyond (Voyager). We have over 100 instruments currently operating on numerous NASA satellites and are developing 14 new instruments for 11 missions funded by NASA, NOAA, and NSF. Of the $1.5B in space assets that the Mission Operations & Data Systems division currently operates, two of the missions were developed, built, and managed from LASP. Graduate Position Open Immediately – 1 Software Engineer/Developer
LASP is preparing to interview graduate students to hire and work with the Operations Software team to support a small contract with Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMC) on an Air Force space mission.
This job will be working alongside LASP and LMC professionals to develop, test, and deploy ground system software and tools used by operations personnel to communicate with various spacecraft and ground stations. Must be a U.S. Citizen eligible for secret clearance in order to apply.
LASP will provide training customized to the requirements of the job while the successful candidate waits to receive their clearance. Once the clearance is complete, the student will train and work at LMC secure facilities in the local/surrounding area with occasional work at LASP.
- Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing a graduate degree from University of Colorado at Boulder
- Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher (unofficial academic transcripts must be provided at time of application)
- Ability to work within a team environment, yet self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication skills
- Overall cumulative GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher
- Experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C/C++, PYTHON, Java, C#, Perl, MatLab, EggPlant, SmallTalk, and/or additional programming languages
- Experience with Unix, Linux, or similar Operating Systems. Microsoft Windows and Office products are also a plus.
- Have a car or other motorized personal transportation
- Have an active DoD security clearance

The ideal graduate student (U.S. Citizen only) has at least 2-3 semesters remaining and majoring in computer science, computer engineering, aerospace engineering, or any a related field if the candidate has programming experience.
The time commitment for a graduate student should expect to work part-time during the semester (20 hours per week) and full-time during the summer (40 hours per week). This is a paid position with competitive compensation including tuition reimbursement and paid university holidays. Work hours are flexible to adjust to student class schedules and are generally M-F. This position is salaried.
