Seminar Abstract:

In August 2014 LASP officially kicked off its involvement in a new kind of spacecraft mission development effort. Working with engineers and scientists from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), LASP is the lead academic partner helping to send a spacecraft to Mars in 2020, for the 50th anniversary of the UAE. The programmatic and scientific goals of the mission are in line with LASP and the University’s commitments to world class science and to education. In the past 14 months we have progressed from a discussion of possible mission concepts to a peer-reviewed “real mission” that is currently in the preliminary design phase. We will present the development of the mission opportunity, the science that the mission will achieve related to Martian atmospheric dynamics and evolution, and the mission implementation plan.
