Seminar Abstract:

The MAVEN mission is focused on understanding the Mars upper atmosphere. It measures the solar input (via EUV, solar energetic particles, and the solar wind); the response related to composition, structure, and variability of the upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere; and the influence on the rate of escape of ions and neutrals to space and the processes controlling them. In addition, we are measuring properties related to the isotopic evolution of the upper atmosphere, as this provides a time-integrated and space-integrated perspective on loss. Results now have been obtained covering a complete Mars year, and are beginning to provide details on these issues. I’ll summarize the mission status and results to date, with an emphasis on escape to space and long-term evolution of the atmosphere.
