Current steps toward a European integrated and federated space weather forecasting capability

| Abstract: |
These are exciting times for space weather research in Europe. There is a convergence of political support for space weather materialising in funding both from ESA and from the European Commission. I will review briefly the status of current research support in Europe and move to overview the research within the SSA (Space Situational Awarness) and FP7 (Framework Programme 7). I will then focus on the three FP7 consortia I coordinate: Swiff (swiff.eu), Soteria (soteria-space.eu) and the new starting eHeroes, and on the space weather activities I coordinate at the Intel Exascience Lab (exascience.com).The talk will not be all about space research policy. It will be mainly centered on the modelling challenges posed by space weather. I will especially describe how our approach has learned form the CISM and CSEM and how our approach is very different in a key respect. I especially look forward to feedback from the audience on the possible collaborations and exchanges of information between the groups involved in space weather research in Boulder and the European efforts I coordinate. |
