Current Update

The Outer Planets project was funded under a NASA grant in 2009; while no updates are scheduled at this time, the information contained on the pages remains accurate.

Introduction

Until Voyager reached the outer solar system we knew very little about the planets that inhabited this region of space. What we have discovered over years of exploration has both excited and mystified us. Come explore the science of the outer planets. Learn what we have already discovered, and discover what we have yet to learn.

Through a series of images, interactive activities, movies, graphs, and calculations, you’ll gain an understanding of solar system formation, the giant planets and their moons and rings, the icy realm of the Kuiper Belt, space junk, and the missions that study the far reaches of our solar system and beyond.
