Launched on August 30, 2012, the Radiation Belt and Storm Probes (RBSP) mission studies the radiation belts that encircle Earth. RBSP will help us understand the Sun’s influence on the Earth and near-Earth space by studying these belts on various scales of space and time. In this first edition of the LASP podcast series, Director Dan Baker discusses LASP’s role on the RBSP mission.

A small satellite designed and developed by CU-Boulder students launched on Sept. 14, 2012, from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Known as the Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE), the satellite is studying violent solar activity. Students are currently monitoring incoming data from this CubeSat mission. Lauren Blum, the satellite’s Program Manager, and Quintin Schiller, the instrument lead, discuss the trials and triumphs of CSSWE.
