Dr. France's work is focused on the dynamics of the stratosphere and mesosphere. In particular, he seeks to understand the role of planetary waves and gravity waves on the mean state, and how they lead to observed climatological features. Jeff studies wave-driven phenomena including elevated stratopause events, interhemispheric coupling, and mesospheric inversion layers.

Dr. France has published work using satellite and WACCM output exploring the climatological structure of the global stratopause and mesospheric temperature inversions. He has published work exploring stratospheric sudden warmings and subsequent elevated stratopause events using SABER, MLS, HIRDLS, and WACCM. Currently he is focused on polar mesospheric clouds, specifically how variability in cloud frequency is driven by inter- and intra-hemispheric coupling with planetary waves.


Dr. France currently works on the Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument science team as part of the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) NASA satellite mission.
