SEE Science Data Mission Log

TIMED-SEE Software

  • plot_see_spwx.zip – IDL procedure for plotting Space Weather data
(works with ASCII (text) Space Weather data files).
  • read_dat.pro – Basic IDL procedure for reading Space Weather data
(works with ASCII (text) Space Weather data files).

    SEE Data Products

SEE performs measurements of the Sun for about 3 minutes every orbit (97 minutes) which usually gives 14-15 observation measurements per day.

    • Daily AveragesDaily averaged SEE data products contain daily averaged solar irradiance data with corrections applied for degradation, 1-AU, and atmospheric absorption.
      • SEE Level 3 : primary data product, 1 nm intervals, over 0.5 to 190.5 nm
      • SEE XPS Level 2 : ~7 nm bands for each of the 9 diodes, over 0.1 to 34.0 + Lyman-alpha
      • SEE EGS Level 2 : 0.1 nm intervals, over 27.05 to 190.50 nm
      • SEE XPS Level 4 Model : Model spectrum from 0-40 nm in 0.1 nm bins with 0.05 nm centers. Model uses XPS measurements, GOES XRS measurements, and the CHIANTI spectral database.
    • Observation Averages Observation averaged SEE data products contain each observation averaged solar irradiance data with corrections applied for degradation, 1-AU, and atmospheric absorption.
      • SEE Level 3A : 1 nm intervals, over 0.5 to 190.5 nm
      • SEE XPS Level 2A : ~7 nm bands for each of the 9 diodes, over 0.1 to 34.0 + Lyman-alpha
      • SEE EGS Level 2A : 0.1 nm intervals, over 27.05 to 190.50 nm
      • SEE XPS Level 4 Model : Model spectrum from 0-40 nm in 0.1 nm bins with 0.05 nm centers. Model uses XPS measurements, GOES XRS measurements, and the CHIANTI spectral database.
      • Space Weather (ASCII) :
The SEE Space Weather data products contain 8 solar indices useful for space weather research and operations. These are ASCII (text) files that provide a convenient method to access select SEE data and are organized into a file for each year.

    SEE Solar Irradiance Data Format

SEE data is stored in the platform-independent NetCDF format and should be treated as binary data. We recommend using the TIMED-SEE NetCDF procedure read_netcdf.pro which is written in IDL. Detailed instructions are available in the read_netcdf readme file. Non-IDL users should visit the Unidata NetCDF site for readers for other languages.

    Level 3

    • SEE Level 3 Data Products and Descriptions The SEE Level 3 data contains merged Level 2 EGS and XPS solar irradiance data integrated in 1 nm intervals from 0.5-190nm. Additionally, 38 solar emission lines are extracted from Level 2 EGS data with the background removed.

    XPS (X-Ray-Ultraviolet Photometer System)

    XPS_Flowbench

    • SEE XPS Level 2 Data Products and Descriptions This suite of broadband X-Ray Photometers (XP) aboard SEE perform full disk irradiance measurements of the Sun from 0.1-35 nm and 121.5 nm. Each photometer is a diode with a special coating that provides a bandpass in this wavelength region.

    EGS (Extreme-Ultraviolet Grating Spectrograph)

    EGS_Flowbench

    • SEE EGS Level 2 Data Products and Descriptions The EGS is a Rowland-circle grating spectrograph aboard SEE which measures the full disk irradiance of the Sun from 26-190 nm (EUV to FUV). All wavelengths are dispersed across a microchannel plate and measured simultaneously on the 1024×64 CODACON.
