LASP Wins Contract For Lunar Studies Lunar Dust

Jan. 9
NASA selected the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics for a four-year, $5 million grant for the creation of the Colorado Center for Lunar Dust and Atmospheric Studies. Led by principal investigator and professor Mihály Horányi, the team will build a dust particle accelerator in a former nuclear physics facility on CU-Boulder’s East Campus as part of the effort.

The team will also study physical characteristics of lunar dust, from its
interactions with the moon's atmosphere and the solar wind to its impacts on optical and mechanical devices that will be on the moon for extended periods. The results of these investigations will extend our knowledge of lunar science and astronaut safety, and will support NASA’s efforts the revisit the lunar surface. Read more
