The approved plan is intermediate between the two options presented to the Comparative Planetary Review in July 2000 and consists of: Full science participation (remote sensing, fields and particles, and radio science) at C30, I31, and I32. Fields and particles and gravity experiments only at I33 and A34. End of mission operations in January 2003. Passive monitoring through impact into Jupiter in September 2003. This mission plan affords us the opportunity to make remote sensing observations of the polar regions of Io, to measure that moon's magnetic field to distinguish an induced versus an intrinsic field, to sample the dust particles in the gossamer rings, to characterize the inner magnetosphere into 2 Rj, and to determine the mass and density of Amalthea. Development of the C30 encounter sequence begins March 26th. Thank you for your patience throughout this process and for your support in keeping in the public eye the unique and exciting science that this mission is still achieving. I will be contacting each Principal Investigator and IDS soon to discuss funding plans to match the approved mission. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or a specific concern before then.
