NASA Group Achievement Award for Galileo Optical Communications from an Earth-Based Transmitter (GOPEX) Demonstration Team, to Karen Simmons of the Concurrence Team, 1993. NASA Group Achievement Award for the Galileo Gaspra Encounter Team to the UVS/EUV Instrument Flight Team, Feb 10, 1993. Aviation Week & Space Technology_ has awarded the Galileo flight team a 1994 Aeorspace Laurel Citation. These certificates are presented to "individuals and teams who made substantial contributions in the global field of aerospace...". We're cited for "the precise choreography that returned unique images of P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 hitting Jupiter, despite only fuzzy predictions of impact times." Further, they acknowlege us the "the discovery of Dactyl, the smallest natural satellite yet found." NASA Group Achievement Award for the Galileo Ida Encounter/Dactyl Discovery Team, to the UVS/EUV Instrument Team, Feb 10, 1995. NASA Group Achievement Award for the Galileo Probe and Orbiter to Jupiter, to the UVS/EUV Instrument Team, April, 1996, "in recognition of significant outstanding contributions to the Galileo Probe and Orbiter to Jupiter, which marked the first entry into an outer planet atmosphere and the first spacecraft to orbit an outer planet, and included the relay of the data from the Probe to the Orbiter." _________________________________________________________________________ MILESTONES Galileo Launch: October 18, 1989 EST=1653:40 UTC Instrument Power On: EUS: 1989-361/17:54:58 UTC UVS: 1989-361/19:11:49 UTC Venus C/A: February 10, 1990 041/05:59:00 SCE UTC Earth 1 C/A: December 8, 1990 342/20:34:34 SCE UTC Gaspra C/A: October 29, 1990 302/22:39:02 SCE UTC Earth 2 C/A: December 8, 1992 343/15:09:?? November 25, 1999 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- OUTREACH Activities The 3rd grade class at Spangler Elementary school in Longmont Colorado build the solar model, based on Voyager images, which now hangs in the Galileo room in LSTB. The model is a scale model and is used when tours and demonstrations show visitors where Jupiter is relative to the Sun other planets, and where the Galileo spacecraft is within the planetary system. The kids painted the styrofoam balls to look like the planets from the pictures we provided. They did an incredible job! The model is very handy and we have a recognition statement hanging on the wall by the "sun" to recognize each child in the class. The Galileo UVS/EUV team has developed an Web page which keeps our distributed team members informed of our planning and analysis activities. As part of this home site, several K-12 learning concepts are being developed for presentation on our site. ===========================================
