The UVS Principle Investigator (PI) is Dr. Charles A. Barth. Refer to the Mariner 1971 UVS instrument paper 'Ultraviolet Spectrometer Experiment', Vol 60, Space Science Reviews, pages 503-530, by C.W. Hord et al, for hardware and calibration information. See the instrument template and the science paper references in the publications template for additional information. Data were obtained for each orbit between November 1971 and March 1972. Occasional post-mission orbits were also obtained and processed. Spectral data from MM71 were obtained in several observation types. The most prevalent observation sets were the 'mapping sequences' where the slit moved across the surface normal, with the narrow side of the slit moving in the spacecraft path direction. This produced the highest resolution for surface mapping. Polar maps were also done. Subsequent topographic maps and volcano height analyses were published. Two mapping sequences were performed on each orbit accompanied by wide angle and narrow angle camera frames. The most significant observation type was the bright and dark limb scans. Other types included Phobos and Deimos observations and Lyman- alpha observations. The MM71 Camera catalogs list these mapping sequences and other observations by time and orbit. The limb scans were particularly useful in defining atmospheric constituents. The slit was brought onto the (bright and dark) limb perpendicular to the limb for highest resolution. These results have also been published. The M9 UVS instrument obtained all orbital data in the same operating mode resulting in identical records for the entire mission. The UVS had two photomultiplier detectors, an F-channel and a G-channel, each obtaining data every three seconds. The data records contain time tags followed by the G-channel engineering housekeeping fiducial and spectrum followed by the F-channel fiducial and spectrum. Grating flyback occurs at the end of each three second instrument period. The F-channel sensi- tivity was autonomously adjusted to maintain count levels in the 0-255DN range. (See details below, under fiducial.) Another instrument mode was possible, for single wavelength Lyman-Alpha observations, but no data from this mode is archived. All of the data archived are raw, uncali- brated spectra. JPL reformatted the spacecraft packets into the current format, as specified by the PI. SEDR geometry was prepared by JPL. Orbital operations consisted of Nadir (apoapsis) and Zenith (periapsis) data collecting periods. Some data from each period was recorded but the majority of the data was transmitted in real time. Nadir passes were given the odd orbit numbers and Zenith passes were given even orbit numbers. The Nadir passes were generally very noisy data sets and most data from these were ignored. Mapping sequences always occurred during Zenith passes. In subsequent archiving the data from the Nadir passes were lost and only the brief playback data from these still remains with the orbit files archived. Within one orbit data file, the Nadir playback appears first, followed by the realtime Zenith pass data followed by the Zenith pass playback. The spacecraft clock times are the key to recognizing the three periods. The Mariner 9 TV picture catalog (referenced elsewhere) is an essential element in understanding orbit numbers versus spacecraft clock as well as science observation designs. Zenith Mapping Sequence times are given in a table below. The spacecraft clock is occasionally missing from the data records. Using a value of 2.5 DAS (Data Automation System) clock ticks per UVS record, we were able to reestablish clock values for each spectral record for the nominal mapping period, ie from orbit 1 to orbit 216. Although it is recognized that this may have led to a few mis-labelled records, having the key DAS clock was of greater importance. The original paper records, of the edited values, are no longer available. The 'j'='K' file versions (of the MMxxxxj.DAT) contain these edited DAS values. Any value of 'j' not equal to 'K' represents an additional edit of the files (for undocumented reasons.) After the main mapping mission, thirty-three post-mission data sets were obtained. These represent valuable seasonal change data sets. The LASP tape archive of the post-mission data sets was lost but a portion of each observation period was recovered from the compact disks (CD) written by the JPL Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT); these CDs were written from 7-track magnetic tape copies of the LASP data however there was about 20% loss of data due to parity errors in reading the magnetic tapes. These post-mission files do not contain edited DAS clock values so expect some DAS values to be zero. For analysis, geometry parameters are obtained from the SEDR (Supplemental Experimenters Data Record) files for the time period of analysis. The SEDRs were created by JPL. The contents are documented in the SEDR labels. SEDR file time coverage may not be related to the contents of the UVS EDR orbit files. A few SEDR files are missing and are no longer available. The SDDPT SEDR CD was not dechiperable. The Mariner 9 camera catalogs are essential ancillary data products for understanding the science observations as well as browse type geometry information and some picture reproductions. There are three catalogs, published as JPL Memorandum 33-585 (Vol I, II, and II Addendum 1), entitled Mariner Mars 1971 Television Picture Catalog. These cover the entire mission giving tables of pictures obtained, diagrams of where each picture was targeted on the planet and relations between the pictures, DAS clock and some geometry values. The file, m9_reflectance_nov2011.dat, is documented in the label of the same name. Software ======== UVS EDR data files are written with IDL (Interactive Data Language, a product of Research Systems, Inc. of Boulder, Colorado.) The original LASP files were created on a Digital Equipment Vax computer from the JPL EDR IBM 7-track tapes. No special software is necessary to read the simple 2-byte integer array structures of the EDR files however an IDL procedure is provided in the software directory for both the XDR (IEEE standard transfer-file format) and Vax/unix file versions (MMRD.PRO). The program reads the EDR files and provides a time decoder, determines the Gain State factor and expands the housekeeping values. IDL structures are provided for EDR and SEDR files. Calibration =========== Sensitivity for both the F-channel and G-channel are given in the Calibration subdirectory, as well as wavelength tables for both. These are all final calibrations. Confidence Level Overview ========================= All EDR data are exactly as recovered from the ground system, except for the DAS clock corrections noted above. Some original data has been lost, as noted above. Grating drive wear over the life of the mission caused the mis-alignment of the wavelength calibration with respect to the spectral data over time; the PI registered all data by locating a prominent spectral feature. Pointing accuracy in the supplemental data is not known. Comparisons between the SEDR geometry, the TV catalog browse geometry and the position of the bright and dark limbs indicates close agreement.
