Recent Progress with Fluxons

Fluxons are discretized magnetic field lines. Fluxon MHD models model individual bundles of magnetic flux as piecewise linear field lines that are subject to curvature and magnetic pressure forces, and relaxed to find the lowest energy state. Additional forces and dynamical terms can be added to the relaxation to yield a Lagrangian (vs. Hamiltonian) formulation of MHD. Fluxon models scale slightly worse than a 2-D simulation but considerably better than a conventional 3-D Eulerian model, while avoiding numerical resistivity altogether. At SwRI we are developing a fluxon model to study CME onset in complex active regions. I will present some recent results from the code development and testing effort.
