Auroral Electrons and Nitric Oxide
Precipitating electrons produce molecular nitrogen ions (upper image), oxygen ions, nitric oxide ions, and excited nitrogen atoms. Excited nitrogen atoms react with molecular oxygen to generate nitric oxide (lower image).
