A new 44-year reanalysis produced by ECMWF that extends from the surface to the lower mesosphere has provided an excellent new data to explore 11-year solar cycle (SC) influence on the stratospheric and tropospheric climate. Results of a multiple regression analysis will be shown, with special emphasis on the winter stratospheric polar vortex and the interaction of the SC with the quasi biennial oscillation (QBO). Some idealised model studies will also be shown that test a possible mechanism for the transmittance of the SC signal from the upper to the lower atmosphere.
