Dr. Claus Fröhlich

Claus Fröhlich received his PhD in solid state physics from the Federal Institute of Technology at Zürich (ETHZ) in 1969. Then, he joined the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos (PMOD) as a research scientist, changing his field to atmospheric and solar physics, starting with solar radiometry. In 1971 he became head of the World Radiation Center at PMOD and in 1975 director of PMOD/WRC (World Radiation Center). His research has concentrated on instrumentation for solar radiometry and the study of solar variability with solar irradiance measurements on space platforms, rockets and high-altitude balloons. These measurements are also used for the study of the Sun by helioseismology. He was Co-Investigator (CoI) of SOVA on the European mission EURECA and Principle Investigator (PI) of IPHIR on the Russian interplanetary mission PHOBOS. He is PI of VIRGO on the ESA/NASA mission SoHO and of SOVIM, which is planned to fly on the International Space Station. A major part of the instrumentation of all these experiments have been developed and built at PMOD/WRC. Besides being CoI on SORCE, he is also involved in the French mission PICARD.
