DE/EICS observations made to test the postulated high altitude ( r/Re ~2)
electrostatic acceleration processes acting parallel to the field line
References
Reiff and her co-workers have analyzed DE -1 and -2 particle and
field data from a number of
conjunction intervals. They found that they had to include
the ion thermal energy
with the upflowing ion bulk energy to get reasonable agreement between
the downcoming electron energy at low altitude and the upflowing
ion energy at high altitude.
Subsequent investigations, including those noted below,
revealed that acceleration of electrons
and ions parallel to the magnetic field can occur over more than
one altitude range on auroral field lines.
