Bill Hartmann does a great deal better on the terrestrial planets than the gas giants - we will be pretty much following the book for here on - coming back to the small bodies in chapters 6 and 7 after the terrestrial planets.
To start the discussion we'll do a whirlwind tour, at the Introductory Astronomy level of the Terrestrial Planets. The text book that is referred to is Cosmic Perspectives, by the way - but you do not need to use it to get the basic idea at this level.
