Setting the Browser to Properly Display Greek Symbols

For Macintosh Systems

If you are using a Mac the solution is rather straightforward. Your computer, when you purchased it or when your department purchased it for you, should come with a font called "symbol" as part of the system fonts. If you open a text editor and try to use this font you should see it appear on the list of fonts to choose from.

In a browser - such as Netscape - the problem comes with how the stuff on the page will be displayed. Netscape has a default setting that tells it to basically ignore the fonts specified by the page source code (the .html code that makes up the page) and to use the regular fonts it uses to diplay the page. You can change this however! Here are the steps:

1. Go to the menu item Edit.

2. Under this menu, go to Preferences ....

3. A window will open. This is the Netscape settings window. On the right hand side there should be a list of categories that Netscape allows you to change and add to.

4. Go to the category of "Appearance", and open it by clicking on the little arrow to the right of the word. Subcategories will open, and normally one of these will be "fonts" and the other will be "colors".

5. Click on the "fonts" and you will notice the left portion of the window change to give you some options to edit. In the lower frame you should see something about chosing how to display fonts. It will say "Somtimes a page will specify its own font." and then it will give you three options on what to do in such cases.

6. Choose the option that says: "Use page-specified fonts, including dynamic fonts".

7. Click OK and you are ready. You can now "reload" the page and it should be able to display all the page-specific fonts.

PC Users

For now you are on your own ... I assume that something similar exists for the PC, but I have to check and make sure. Once I find it out I will add it to this page. On Netscape the PCs that I've looked at display the symbol fonts properly.

Also, if you are using Internet Explorer ... I don't have a solution! I will have to look into it and see how it works.
