CCLDAS dust accelerator delivered
January 18, 2011
After a year and a half of preparation, CCLDAS marked a milestone on Wednesday as the 3 MV electrostatic accelerator finally arrived at CU. Share in the excitement by watching assembly activities via the live accelerator cam.
The lunar surface is continually bombarded with micrometeorites. The impacts of such particles at the lunar surface introduce significant potential hazards to humans and instruments, and create a scientifically rich, complex system. The dust accelerator at CCLDAS is the designed to support investigation into to the physics of micrometeorid impacts, high-velocity dust in the lunar environment, and instrument calibration and testing.
