2.0 MMS Flight Dynamics and Ephemeris/Attitude

  • Phase 1A Sliding Science ROI: 
    • Recall our previous discussion RE orienting the entry/exit of ROI to optimize orientation with predicted magnetopause. This "sliding science ROI" will be implemented as soon as possible;

    • The SOC has evaluated the Petrinec Update and, as a next step, provided a recommendation for implementation. POC is Pat Smith for this.
    • The attached plot is an extremely simplified schedule based on Steve's optimized orbits.  I took the midpoint in time of the optimized ROI, and expanded it so that the ROI duration equals the duration of the control ROI.  I updated it every 4 weeks on the orbit that would correspond to the beginning of our ATS load.  In the beginning and end of Phase1a this would push the ROI underneath 7RE where EIS and FPI ramp down voltages.  During these times I just kept the ROI as close to 7RE as possible without going underneath.  This results in the following schedule:

    • All, Here is another plot, updating the offsets every two weeks using the optimal values for the middle day, rounded to the nearest minute.  If there is a preference to always encompass the entire optimal ROI I can do that instead by choosing the min/max offset for ROI entrance and exit respectively, instead of the values from the middle day.  Let me know how this looks and I can generate a table.  I would be happy to call into the science meeting tomorrow.  -Patrick


3.0 MMS Burst Memory Management



  • If there are updates to the SITL CDF data product structure, content, or delivery schedules; please notify the Supervisory SITLs before deployment.   We have had a few disruptions to the SITL process when new files were not compatible with the SITL software.  Similarly, you should notify this forum for broader changes so that the broader range of codes can be smoothly updated as well.
  • MMS inclusion into SPEDAS is progressing.  There are crib sheets in the MMS Project folder that are of use now.  As these progress and data products become available these will be expanded and inclusion in the GUI will continue to expand. 

5.0  Tetrahedron Management:

  • STP-MMS-P40: Spacecraft Constellation Formation Quality.  A Quality Factor shall be developed that defines the usefulness of the tetrahedron formation of the four spacecraft that is the product of two functions. One function is a metric of the inner spacecraft separation, and the other is a metric of the tetrahedron shape.  This Quality Factor shall be greater than or equal to 0.7 for 80% of the time in the regions of science interest. The regions of science interest are defined as geocentric distances >9 RE for Phase 1, and >15 RE for Phase 2. There is no formation requirement or region of science interest defined during the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2.
