  • INSTRUCTIONS TO SET UP SPEDAS SOFTWARE
  • TUTORIALS ON SPEDAS FROM GEM MEETING
  • FROM JIM: TDAS, as you know, is a plug-in to SPEDAS. SPEDAS is where the generic tplot functionality is supported. TDAS though does the THEMIS-specific calls, for example: specific Distribution Function cuts or spectrograms. Those THEMIS-specific calls rely on the THEMIS coordinate system etc, but can be modified for MMS easily and then inserted into the MMS Data Analysis System plug-in with different prefix, so there is no conflict.

  • FROM VASSILIS: Look at the TDAS tutorial, for an explanation of how the software works in the command line. (SPEDAS tutorial covers mostly the GUI). Look at TDAS tutorial page 19, and there you will find command line scripts that show examples for various THEMIS analysis tools. Those programs exist in the IDL bleeding edge release you have downloaded. (you just say: “.e thm_crib_sst.pro” and you can view it in IDL). I would envision MMS to develop one crib sheet per instrument, or per product line, as shown there. Think of each crib sheet as a few lines of code, well documented with comments, explaining “how to” import, analyze and plot the data with a few simple commands for that instrument. Of course Jim’s crib sheet does this for many instruments. As the number of quantities becomes larger one crib sheet becomes too large to use, hence we split them. Note that cirb sheets are not necessarily to be run as executables, but are most useful for “cut and paste” operations.
