The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced on Feb. 17, 2010, that Dr. Daniel N. Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, was elected as a new academy member. Baker was honored for his leadership in the study of, and for his development of predictive tools for, the Earth’s radiation environment. He was also cited for his work on radiation’s impact on our nation’s security. Election to the National Academy is among the highest professional distinctions awarded to an engineer or scientist.

“It is a tremendous honor for me to be elected into the National Academy of Engineering,” said Baker. “ Understanding space weather and the radiation environment surrounding our planet is vital to protecting systems we rely heavily upon for our nation’s health, security and well being. I am pleased that the academy has recognized this work with this selection.”

Baker is engaged in a broad range of service, research and education activities that affect knowledge transfer in space research and space weather. He is currently working extensively with industry and the U.S. Department of Defense to share knowledge about the space environment and its impact on human technological systems. Baker chairs an advisory committee for the Air Force Technical Applications Center, consults with Science Applications International Corporation and Booz Allen Hamilton, and devotes substantial effort to improving agency-community cooperation through the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo.

Baker also teaches undergraduate and early-career graduate students about space science at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling (CISM) summer school, held under NSF sponsorship at Boston University.

The NAE elected 68 new members, including Baker, bringing the total U.S. membership to 2,267. Established in 1964, the academy falls under the same congressional act of incorporation that established the National Academy of Sciences. The NAE provides advisory services to the federal government through the National Research Council.
