A paper by Bailey et al. that was recently published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters was chosen as an American Geophysical Union Research Highlight: https://eos.org/research-spotlights/causes-nitric-oxide-infiltrate-ozone-layer. The paper describes observations by the AIM Solar Occultation For Ice Experiment (SOFIE) that document the transport of odd nitrogen produced by energetic particle precipitation (EPP) from the lower thermosphere to the stratosphere in the Arctic winter of 2013. See http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL059860/abstract.

Contour plot of NO mixing ratio observed by the Solar Occultation for Ice Experiment (SOFIE) during the first 140 days of 2013. The vertical grey line highlights the 11 January 2013 Stratospheric Sudden Warming (SSW). The white plusses show the SOFIE measurement latitudes. Regions of black color indicate values below 1.0 ppbv.
