MAVEN Postcard from Mars!

An image of Mars taken by the IUVS instrument on MAVEN. At the bottom and top of Mars, there are white swirling clouds, showing how dynamic Mars’ weather can be. The planet is tinted blue and green due to the mid-ultraviolet image being scaled to visible wavelengths.

MAVEN sent us a postcard from Mars! Talk about an Earth look-a-like!

During a routine image session, the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) instrument aboard MAVEN snapped a mid-ultraviolet image of Mars, which has been scaled to visible wavelengths to produce this image. It’s a cloudy time of year on Mars, and we see some spiral-shaped clouds near the top of the image, showing how dynamic, and almost Earth-like, Mars’ weather can be.

These routine images allow the team to track the weather on Mars, especially clouds and dust storms.
