These animated field lines were generated with the VIP4 + Connerney current sheet model. The Voyager 1 trajectory is shown in pink and is traced along the magnetic field to the magnetic equator (white) and the centrifugal equator (blue).

Contours of electron density in the Io Plasma Torus at 4 System III longitudes

The contours of electron density are based on the Voyager PLS data extrapolated along magnetic field lines and assuming azimuthal symmetry. The 4 longitudes correspond to locations where the equators cross and where there is maximum tilt.

Full 3-D torus animation

Assuming azimuthal symmetry, the contours of electron density in the Io Plasma Torus are wrapped around Jupiter. Io and Europa trajectories are shown with appropriate distances and period – but random timing.
