LASP Rocket Program

Calibrations to extend mission life and save money

The following video shows the successful NASA 36.290 launch from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The scientific rocket carried a replica of the EVE instrument aboard NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory to check the performance of the EVE optical system. Both EVE and the prototype were built at LASP.

Based on the real-time data collected during this launch, all of the EVE instrument channels on the rocket made excellent solar extreme ultraviolet irradiance measurements. Regular calibration like this has extended the life of SDO, ensuring continuity of crucial scientific records and saving taxpayer dollars.
