Data summaries

How the data are sorted

The nitric oxide data are sorted by several criteria.

  • The data are sorted in geographic coordinates for equatorial latitudes and in geomagnetic coordinates for polar latitudes.
  • The data are first separated by date, taking only the spring and fall equinoxes in 1982 through 1985, and the spring equinox of 1986. The sorted data include the equinox day plus and minus 30 days.
  • The data are then sorted by indices. The two indices used are the geomagnetic Ap index and the F10.7 cm solar flux. The indices are separated into low, medium, and high values as shown in the table below:

  • Finally, the data are averaged resulting in profiles for the equatorial and polar regions. These regions are defined by:

    Equatorial 25°S–25°N Geographic
    Polar 65°N/S–80°N/S Geomagnetic
