Learning about planetary space environments
Frank Crary contributed to research in planetary magnetospheres, participating in the Galileo, Deep Space 1, Cassini, Juno and MAVEN missions. He attended UC Berkeley and obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics and astrophysics in 1991. He then came to CU Boulder for graduate studies where he combined both Voyager and Galileo data to study the interaction of Io with the surrounding magnetospheric plasma, as well as the Io plasma torus. Frank received his Ph.D. from CU Boulder’s Astrophysical, Planetary, and Atmospheric Sciences Department in 1998. In 2000, he moved to University of Michigan for post-doctoral work on the CAPS instrument on Cassini. This was followed by work at the Southwest Research Institute where he eventually became the PI of CAPS and attained the rank of Senior Research Scientist. He returned to LASP in 2012 and continued to work on CAPS data analysis and served as a MAVEN Participating Scientist. Frank Crary passed away in November 2023.
The Frank J. Crary Graduate Fellowships of $5,000 are awarded to graduate students at CU Boulder who have demonstrated interest in studying the space environment of a planetary object.
