Impactor Box Systems

The Impactor Box Systems (IBS) was the central piece of equipment in the COLLIDE experiment. It held the experiment dust (lunar simulant) behind its sliding door until the space shuttle has reached orbit. Once in orbit, the door in the IBS slide open, revealing the dust that floats in space. The launcher system then ejected a teflon projectile into the floating dust, which created an impact that was filmed by the camera. LASP provided six IBS units for COLLIDE-2, and each IBS has nearly 60 parts made from various materials including aluminum, teflon, delrin, and polycarbonate.
