Improving predictions through artificial intelligence

When you think about machine learning or artificial intelligence, you might imagine a robot with human-like mental capabilities à la Blade Runner. In reality, many scientists and software engineers use machine learning—a way of programming a computer to improve at a task without human intervention—for far less exotic tasks. These include teaching a computer to recognize anomalies in images or find patterns in vast swaths of data.

Our software engineers are increasingly applying machine learning to the data collected at LASP. This includes a project in conjunction with the Deep Learning Laboratory at CU Boulder’s Space Weather Technology, Research and Education Center to improve predictions of when a large solar flare is likely occur.
