Biography
Sergio is a researcher specializing in space weather and magnetospheric physics, driven by a profound curiosity about Earth's magnetosphere and its interactions with the solar wind. His research primarily focuses on investigating phenomena such as relativistic electron precipitation (REP) and geomagnetically induced currents (GICs).
Sergio's work involves analyzing data from instruments aboard the International Space Station (ISS), particularly the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) experiment, the SAMPEX spacecraft, and the Van Allen Probes to study REP events. He’s also interested in Integrating advanced machine learning techniques into data analysis, focusing on unsupervised REP event detection and identification.
Additionally, Sergio currently leads a NASA - Living With a Star project that explores the complex relationship between solar wind structures and the solar wind pre-conditions leading to the generation of GICs. Using observations from the Heliophysics System Observatory (HSO) and ground-based magnetometer stations, his project aims to uncover the fundamental drivers governing GICs, contributing to improved space weather forecasting and mitigation strategies.
Beyond his research endeavors, Sergio is deeply interested in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the scientific community, especially for mentoring and teaching. He is currently involved in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program where he enjoys guiding and inspiring new researchers from different backgrounds.
