Biography

Terri’s interest in science began at an early age while growing up in a home whose cornerstone was a meteorite. Daydreaming about that rock's uncharted adventures sparked her passion for storytelling and inspired her career as a science communicator.

At LASP, Terri oversees external, internal, and crisis communications, media relations, and outreach activities on behalf of the Lab's leadership and 600 employees. Prior to joining LASP, Terri served as the Head of Media, Communications, and Outreach for the 20,000-member European Geosciences Union, the Outreach Director for the Extreme Ice Survey, and as a member of the environmental studies faculty at Prescott College in Arizona.

Terri also has extensive experience as a freelance science and travel writer, penning award-winning content for clients and outlets ranging from the U.S. Geological Survey, Eos, Scientific American, and New Scientist to Lonely Planet, Outside, and the L.A. Times travel section. She earned a master’s degree in geology at the University of California-Santa Cruz and an undergraduate degree in archaeology from Tufts University. She is the author or co-author of five books, including Moon Colorado and Hiking the Grand Canyon's Geology.

Terri served as the Geological Society of America’s 2019-2020 Science Communication Fellow and is the recipient of a 2019 Association of Health Care Journalists Fellowship and a 2016 EGU Science Journalism Fellowship, among other honors. She is a longstanding member of the National Academy of Sciences-sponsored U.S. Geoheritage and Geoparks Advisory Committee, a board member of Sweden's ProGEO organization, and a passionate advocate for women in STEM disciplines.
