Solar EUV Irradiance Inter-Calibration and Validation Workshop

October 25-27, 2011
Laboratory for Atmospheric & Space Physics Room LSTB-A200
Boulder, Colorado

We are in an era when there are multiple simultaneous measurements of the solar EUV irradiance being made with intrumentation instrumentation of differing design and calibration methodologies.  Comparing measurements is only the first step in understanding the true value and variability of the EUV spectral irradiance.  Understanding potential differences in results requires detailed comparisons of the instruments and methodologies used to make the measurements.

...

  • Irradiance results
  • Instrument design
  • Measurement equation
  • Sampling in time and wavelength
  • Dark correction
  • Calibration methodology
  • Degradation models and corrections

The overarching goal of this workshop is to come to an understanding of how the EUV irradiance is being measured and to develop a unified strategy for determining the absolute value of the EUV irradiance and how it varies, both in wavelength and time.

Kickoff/Keynote talk on "Lessons “Lessons Learned from TSI Inter-Comparisons" Comparisons” by Greg Kopp.

Detailed Agenda

25th October:

Introductions

  • Introduction to LASP (15)
    • Logistics (5)
    • Group member introductions (30)
    • Purpose of the WG (15)
      • This meeting is mostly to try and work out strategies to go forward, as it is very unlikely we will have answers to the irradiance issues by the end of the meeting.
  • Lessons learned from TSI Intercomparisons (30) (Greg Kopp (LASP))

coffee

  • Instrument overviews (20 – 30 mins from each group, but this is a round-table discussion, not just presentations. The aim of this session is that everybody understands the other instruments in enough detail to enable sensible discussions)
    • Instrument design and Calibration philosophy
    • Wavelength and time sampling
    • Questions and discussion throughout!

working lunch

26th October:

  • Why does this matter? (20) (Eberhard / Peter?)
  • Solar Physics (20) (Rachel Hock (LASP))

coffee

  • Measurement equations and degradation methodology

lunch

  • Data Intercomparisons

27th October:

  • NSLS calibration facility (20) (Jim Bremmer)
  • SURF III calibration facility (20) (Uwe Arp (NIST))
  • Where do we go from here
    • Groupings (as Greg mentioned)
    • Work assignments
      • Short term goals
      • Longer term goals
    • Methods of interaction
    • Next meeting
    • ISSI Proposal ?
