Introduction to the EICS SATF Catalog

The Energetic Ion Composition Spectrometer (EICS) Stand Alone Telemetry File (SATF) format and catalog.

Including information about data quality flags and summary data files. derived from the stand alone telemetry files. Information about intervals of temporal and spatial coverage are also available on-line.

General descriptions of the EICS instrument and the Dynamics Explorer (DE) program are given in the VOLDESC.SFD file contained on each volume of EICS Stand Alone Telemetry archived at the National Space Science Data Center. A copy of the file can be displayed by clicking here

An overview of the organization of Stand Alone Telemetry Files produced from data returned by the DE -1 Energetic Ion Composition Spectrometer (EICS) instrument is given in the FORMAT.SFD file also contained on each optical volume. A copy of this file will be displayed by clicking here .

The listing of intervals for which EICS stand alone telemetry files are available is given in the file: https://lasp.colorado.edu/timas/DE/eicsdata.lis

EICS Stand Alone Telemetry Files, documentation describing them, and software to read them are available from NASA's Data Archive and Distribution Service.

Summary data files of 96 second average fluxes at a number of pitch angles for H+, O+, and He+ ions have been produced and archived at the Lockheed Palo Alto Laboratories in a highly compressed non-standard format. Click here for more information.

Data quality flags

are included in the eicsdata.lis file. Data quality information was obtained from summary spectrograms produced at the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratories.
The data quality symbols used are '---', N, C, A, and blank :

--- indicates that the data have not yet been inspected for
	quality.

no symbol (ie. blank) indicates that the data are in one of
two standard modes (i.e. DRUM or FAST mode) and have been included
in the EICS high resolution summary data base.

N indicates that the data have NOT been included in our high
resolution summary data base. Reasons for not including the
data interval include, but are not limited to, instrument off,
instrument mode other than DRUM or FAST, telemetry noise,
duplicate file, or a short data interval.

C	indicates that the data in the lowest energy channel include
a spurious count rate from the photoionization of residual
neutral gases in the preacceleration region of the spectrometer
as discussed by Shelley et al., Geophys. Res. Lett. 9, p942,
	1982.

A	indicates that information about the orientation of the EICS
sensor relative to the spacecraft velocity is not available.
Pitch angle information is always available.

In addition to the start and stop times of an interval, each line of the file EICSDATA.LIS contains: the date the data were added to the EICS stand alone telemetry data base ( field 12); file name and location information ( fields 1,2 and 11); file size information (the approximate number of 8 second telemetry blocks in the file, field 3)

A complete description of the data in eicsdata.lis is given in the file: text_describing_the_eicsdata.lis_file or available on the LASP server at https://lasp.colorado.edu/timas/DE/

Summary data files (SDF)

96 second average fluxes at a number of pitch angles for H+, O+, and He+ ions have been produced from EICS Stand Alone Telemetry Files. Note that summary files are not available for intervals with an 'N' data quality flag. Summary data files have been the basis of several recent publications. (Peterson et al., Geophys. Res. Lett. 19, 1439, 1992; Collin et al. J. Geophys Res. 93, 7558, 1988; Chiu et al. Geophys. Res. Lett. 17, 267, 1990; and others)

The summary data files are now available on request in NASA's Common Data Format. For more information click here..
