A paper authored by recent CU graduate Ethan Peck and co-authored by Cora Randall and V. Lynn Harvey was recently featured in Eos. The paper explores solar cycle effects on the middle atmosphere in the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) version 3 and version 4. They found that WACCM 4 produces a stronger residual circulation than version 3, leading to enhanced decent of NOx and a subsequent increase in stratospheric ozone destruction. This study provides the groundwork for future modelling studies to improve our understanding of the sun’s impact on climate.
The original paper, entitled “Simulated solar cycle effects on the middle atmosphere: WACCM3 Versus WACCM4” was published in June 2015 in Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth System
