Seminar Abstract:

The Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska was one of the first US university institutions to accept Chinese graduate students after 1979. As director of that institute and, later, chairman of several international scientific programs, I traveled seven times to China between 1982 and 2012 on official missions, lecturing on space science at Chinese universities and institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and discussing cooperative programs in space research and global climate change. Since I was able to witness the phenomenal development of science and technology in that country during that time, I will describe what I learned (with abundant slides), discuss the respective long-term impacts on the scientific establishment of the Cultural Revolution and the Four Modernizations, and make comparisons with Gorbachev’s Perestroika and Glasnost in the USSR as well as with my own experience with science expansion in Argentina between 1955 and 1966.
